Shanghai

Shanghai is the most cosmopolitan city in mainland China, due to its present status in international trade as well as its history of being carved up by Western imperialists during the Century of Humiliation. It is one of a few cities in China (alongside Hong Kong and Taipei) to have Pride parades and LGBTQ organizations.

Shanghai experienced rapid development under Deng Xiaoping as a Special Economic Zone.
