The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a social democratic non-profit organization in the United States. It was founded in 1982 out of a merger between the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC) and the New American Movement (NAM).

Traditionally it was connected to the ideology of Michael Harrington, an anti communist social democrat with a Catholic social teaching. The DSA held pro-American position in the Cold-War, such as supporting Perestroika[1] and condemning China after the riots in Tianenman Square[2].

The DSA largely remained a tiny and irrelevant social club inside of the Democratic Party until 2015, when Bernie Sanders launched his 2016 presidential campaign. Since then, the DSA has grown into a much larger organization with different caucuses (factions).

Some of these factions include Marxist Unity Group[3], which generally shares similar beliefs to the Cosmonaut[4] blog and the Weekly Worker[5], the publication of the Communist Party of Great Britain (Provisional Central Committee).

There are also attempts at entryism being lead by groups such as Socialist Alternative, and Socialist Revolution.
