Gonzalo Lira (1968 – 2024) was a Chilean-American economist, author, and blogger. He was known for his blog "Gonzalo Lira's Blog", where he wrote on issues related to economics, finance, and politics, with a focus on the global economic crisis and the Eurozone debt crisis. He also wrote several books on these topics, including "The Coming First World Debt Crisis" and "The Great Depression of XXI Century". He was a self-described libertarian and was critical of the Federal Reserve and other central banks. He was also critical of the political and economic policies of governments, particularly those of the United States and Europe, arguing that they will lead to economic collapse and social unrest. He was considered a controversial figure in the economics and political sphere, and his views and predictions have been both praised and criticized.
In the context of the Russian Special Military Operation Lira emerged as a leading critic of Ukraine, Zelensky, and US involvement in the war. He traveled to Ukraine to report on abuses by the national government. Since May 2023 he faced indefinite imprisonment by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on charges of being a pro-Russian agitator.[1]
Death
On January 12th, 2024, he died in a Ukrainian prison after being denied treatment for pneumonia since early December 2023.[2]
His father alleged that he was tortured and willfully executed on behalf of the Biden administration.[3]
