On Feb 3, 2023 a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying vinyl chloride derailed and exploded. The debris was then subjected to a controlled burn by emergency crews, which released hydrogen chloride and phosgene into the air.[1][2]

No one was killed in the actual event itself, but fears about the chemical exposure remains.[3][4]
