The coup had been planned for some time, with Gus Hall and his supporters having managed to successfully infiltrate over 40% of the CPUSA leadership. It started when his supporters seized the ''[[People’s Weekly World]]'' and then used their influence in the party to purge all opposition members. One of those people was Sam Webb, who remained a close associate of Gus Hall while working behind his back. When Gus Hall Died in 2000, Sam Webb took over the party, purging any pro soviet and Marxist-Leninist trace of the party.
After Gus Hall's successful coup in the CPUSA, the party descended very quickly into chaos.
