The Bilderberg group has met annually since 1954, when it was established with the stated aim of preventing another world war. The group's secrecy and elite membership have made it notorious; groups and individuals ranging from Fidel Castro and Lyndon LaRouche to the John Birch Society and Alex Jones have described it as manipulating world politics from behind the scenes, aiming to install a world government of bankers and oligarchs. On the left it is seen as an exponent of finance capital, on the right world communism.

Membership overlap (notably, Antoine Pinay co-founded both groups) with ''Le Cercle'' has led some to identify the two, but while they both came out of the movement for a United Europe, the latter organization was not merely a forum for policy coordination but also an intelligence network critically involved in the CIA sponsored terror campaign in Europe known as Operation Gladio. Moreover ''Le Cercle'' was dominated by Catholic cults and knighthoods like Opus Dei and the Order of Malta for much of its history, with strong ties to the old continental nobility, and aimed at something more akin to a new Holy Roman Empire. Behind the cloud of occult speculation, Bilderberg group is in fact a very serious organization - but not in the fantastic sense imagined by some of its critics. This collection of international bankers, industrialists and government officials attend to the boring but profound task of organizing the world economy.
